The European Patent Office (EPO) launched a data dashboard on July 24, revealing the main sources of unitary patent applications. The unitary patent is a new type of patent protection system that allows applicants to obtain a uniform patent right in the EU member states through a single application. The system was officially implemented on June 1 this year, aiming to simplify and reduce the cost and complexity of European patent applications.
According to the data shown by the dashboard, since the implementation of the unitary patent, there have been an average of 670 applications per week. This indicates the popularity and attractiveness of the unitary patent, as well as the innovation potential of the European market.
From the perspective of the country distribution of applications, China ranks fifth in terms of application volume (287), behind Germany (1016), the United States (712), France (400) and Switzerland (324). This shows China’s progress and achievements in scientific and technological innovation, as well as the importance and confidence that Chinese enterprises attach to the European market.
From the perspective of the fields of application, infrastructure and mechanical applications are the highest, reaching 1061, followed by health (1017), materials and production (992) and digital technology (536). This reflects the innovation needs and motivation of various industries in coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, promoting economic recovery, improving the quality of life and so on.
Antonio Campinos, president of the EPO, said that the unitary patent provides European innovators with a simpler, more convenient and more economical way of patent protection, which helps to enhance Europe’s position in global competition. He also said that he welcomes applicants from all over the world to use the unitary patent system, to promote cross-border cooperation and knowledge sharing.
