China Central Television (CCTV) has announced that it holds the exclusive all-media rights and exclusive sublicensing rights for the 31st FISU World University Games (Chengdu Universiade) in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.

The Chengdu Universiade will be held in Chengdu, Sichuan province, from July 28 to August 8, 2023. It is one of the largest multi-sport events in the world, featuring more than 10,000 university athletes from over 170 countries and regions competing in 18 sports.

As of the date of this statement, CCTV has authorized China Mobile Migu, Douyin, Chengdu Universiade official new media platform, Chengdu Radio and Television new media platform, as well as terrestrial TV channels and/or radio frequencies in Sichuan province and Chengdu city (as specified in the annex of this statement) to use the Chengdu Universiade audiovisual content.

CCTV stated that without the formal authorization of its general manager’s office, no organization or individual is allowed to use the Chengdu Universiade audiovisual content, broadcast TV signal or any related audiovisual material in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao through any means, such as live broadcast, delayed broadcast, on-demand, replay, download or theater screening, public place screening, etc., via any platform or technology, such as TV, radio, internet, mobile communication network, IPTV, internet TV, mobile media TV, various application software and other audiovisual transmission technologies or platforms.

CCTV will join forces with various parties to increase the protection of rights and interests, take effective measures to crack down on the infringement of Chengdu Universiade program copyright and the unfair competition using CCTV’s Chengdu Universiade program resources, and pursue the legal responsibility of relevant entities.

Chengdu will become the third city on the Chinese mainland to host the biennial Summer Universiade, following Beijing in 2001 and Shenzhen in 2011. The city has constructed 13 new venues and facilities while renovating 36 existing ones for the University Games. The opening ceremony of the Chengdu Universiade will be held on July 28 at the Dong’an Lake Sports Park Stadium while the closing ceremony is scheduled for August 8 at the Chengdu Open Air Music Park. The archery and water polo events, however, will get underway on July 27.
