Indonesian Court Dismisses Nokia's Patent Infringement Lawsuit Against Vivo

Nokia has received about 10 consecutive unfavorable judgments in Indonesia and may receive more, as there is a delay between court rulings and information disclosure, local reports said.

Recently, the Central Jakarta Commercial Court rejected five patent infringement lawsuits against OPPO and certain related companies, and the Indonesian Supreme Court upheld most, if not all, of the lower court's rulings.

Nokia has filed numerous lawsuits against Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo in different countries and regions. The latest news is that the Indonesian court has rejected the case numbered 31/Pdt.Sus-HKI/Paten/2022/PN Niaga Jkt.Pst.

For Nokia, a company with one of the world's top litigation departments, this is a significant blow. The situation shows that it is not easy or straightforward to negotiate with cellular standard implementers in some key markets.

Indonesia is a crucial market where Nokia has disputes with OPPO and Vivo. Currently, OPPO has left the German market, and Vivo's market share in Germany is smaller than when OPPO withdrew.

The disputes between Nokia and OPPO, Vivo will eventually be resolved, either by the Intermediate People's Court of Chongqing, China, making a global FRAND ruling or by OPPO or Vivo obtaining an injunction against Nokia's mobile base stations in Germany.
