China’s Patents in Force Reached Four Million in 2022

The end of the year 2022 saw China’s patent availability reaching a new height. Among the total of 4.2 million applications, 9.4 patents per 10,000 populations were assessed to have retained the high value. Registration of trademarks had also surpassed 42.67 million. 

Statistics show that the added value of patent intensive industry had reached 14.3 trillion yuan, occupying 12.4% of the total GDP. The total volume of import and export of patent royalties had reached 2.19 trillion yuan, which grew by an average of 13.7% per year. Pledge and financing of patent had grew ten-fold during the past ten year, entering the four-hundred-billion-yuan threshold. Another 52 enterprises from China joined the Fortune 500 Club, securing a total profit over 1.6 trillion dollars. 

Shen Changyu, head of the National Intellectual Property Administration, has announced that efforts will be made in 2023 to enhance the comprehensive use of intellectual property by innovative entities. The country will vigorously cultivate and develop patent-intensive industries, and advance the work of recognizing patent-intensive products. The "Thousand Enterprises, Hundred Cities" trademark brand value enhancement campaign will be launched, and the China Trademark Brand Development Index report will be compiled and released. The promotion of geographical indication will also be deepened to help rural revitalization, and the implementation of the "Geographical Indication Brand+" special plan will be promoted to drive the development of characteristic industries.
