On December 2, the Trademark Office of National Intellectual Property Administration issued the notice on its rejection of several trademark registration applications suspicious of malicious hijack of buzzwords including "World Cup" and "La'eeb", and the registered trademarks were declared invalid.
The 22nd FIFA World Cup held in Qatar has attracted worldwide attention. To seek improper benefits, some enterprises and natural persons had maliciously registered trademarks on buzzwords and popular signs such as "World Cup", as well as names of famous football star and the mascots "LA’EEB", which had sabotaged social and public interests.
The National Intellectual Property Administration attaches great importance to the intellectual property protection of the Qatar World Cup and resolutely cracks down on malicious cybersquatting. According to Article 10.1.7 of the Trademark Law, a total twenty-six trademark registration applications (such as registration No.66999855 "World Cup" and registration No.63803887 "LA’EEB") had been rejected; according to 44.1 of the Trademark Law, the registered trademark No.63767652 "LA’EEBS" was declared invalid ex officio.
