On July 12, 2022, the Information Office of the State Council held a press conference to introduce the statistical data of intellectual property related work in the first half of 2022.

DATA OF PATENTS: The first half of the year saw authorization of 393,000 invention patents, 1,473,000 utility model patents and 383,000 design patents, and reception of 33,000 PCT international patent applications. The Chinese applicants submitted 353 international applications for industrial designs through the Hague Agreement on international registration of industrial designs. The patent office also reached conclusion of 31000 patent reexamination cases, and 5000 invalidation cases. By the end of June 2022, the effective number of invention patents in China was 3.906 million, an increase of 17.5% year-on-year. 

DATA OF TRADEMARKS: In the first half of this year, China registered 3.674 million trademarks, with 2,699 applications for international registration of Madrid trademarks submitted by domestic applicants, and completed the examination of 81,000 trademark objection cases and 217,000 trademark review cases. By the end of June 2022, a total of 40.545 million effective trademarks had been registered, a year-on-year increase of 20.9%. 

GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS: The first half of this year saw approval of three geographical indication products, 365 geographical indications approved to be registered as collective trademarks and certification trademarks, and 2,239 market entities approved to use special geographical indications. By the end of June 2022, a total of 2,493 geographical indication products have been approved. 6927 geographical indications were approved to be registered as collective trademarks and certification trademarks. 19350 market entities approved to use special geographical indications.

INTEGRATED CIRCUIT LAYOUT DESIGN: The first half of this year saw application of 7,661 integrated circuit layout design and issuance of 5,233 certificates. By the end of June 2022, there have been a total of 74,000 integrated circuit layout design registration applied and 57,000 certificates issued.

These data of the first half of 2022 are mainly characterized in: a stable trend of intellectual property creation; a strong innovation vitality of domestic enterprises; a more inclusive financing of patent and trademark pledge; an expanded scale of geographical indication industry; and a strengthened patent reserves in emerging technology fields.
