InterDigital Sues Lenovo for Patent Infringement in US Court

On September 1, technology research and development company InterDigital filed a new patent infringement lawsuit against Lenovo Group in the US District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

InterDigital accused Lenovo of infringing its five patents related to video coding AV1 and VP9. The US patent numbers of the five patents are: 10,250,877; 8,674,859; 9,674,556; 9,173,054; and 8,737,933.

According to the complaint, the patent number 10,250,877 is titled “Method and device for coding image blocks, corresponding decoding method and decoding device”, and was granted on April 2, 2019.

The patent number 8,674,859 is titled “Arithmetic coding and decoding method and corresponding devices”, and was granted on March 18, 2014.

The patent number 9,674,556 is titled “Method and device for in-loop de-ringing filtering”, and was granted on June 6, 2017.

The patent numbers 9,173,054 and 8,737,933 are both titled “Data transmission between wireless devices”, and were granted on October 27, 2015 and May 27, 2014 respectively.

InterDigital is the assignee of the above patents and owns all rights to them.

InterDigital claimed in the lawsuit that Lenovo’s smartphones, laptops, desktops and tablets sold in the US use its AV1 and VP9 technologies covered by the above patents.

InterDigital asked the court to declare that Lenovo had infringed its rights and to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting Lenovo from selling the alleged infringing products. InterDigital also requested damages (including but not limited to treble damages for willful infringement) as well as related interest and attorney fees.
